Learning Conversations.
Parents, as promised here as some conversation starters to discuss your child's learning with him/her at home. These are very general guidelines to give you an idea of what we are learning at school. These learning conversations are a valuable way to solidfy your students learning at school and to connect with your child.
Math:
Share with your child what you know about stocks.
Ask your child about the stocks they chose for our math project. Encourage him/her to talk about why he/she chose each stock.
Take a look at the TSX together online. http://www.investcom.com/page/toronto.html
Discuss with your child, and explore online or in books: What causes a stock market to crash? What impact does this have?
Language:
Rent a mystery film. Encourage your child to discuss the elements of a mystery he/she can identify in the film.
Go to your local library and borrow a mystery book that you can
read together. Visit http://edina.k12.mn.us/concord/classrooms/media/readinglists/Mysterygr5.pdffor a list of mystery books to look
for!
Ask your child what he or she has learned about mysteries. What
makes a mystery a mystery?
Brainstorm possible ideas for a mystery story with your child.
Read a book with your child and discuss his/her use of
visualizing while reading. Or discuss about a book they are reading
independently.
Watch a movie and/or tv show together. Discuss any hidden
messages, meanings and/or inferences and how they were expressed to the
audience.

we have been studying (respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive,
muscular).

Perhaps someone in your family has been affected in some way by an illness (eg.
lung cancer = respiratory system).
Discuss healthy choices that students can make to promote the
growth and development of their body (e.g. eating healthy, exercise, getting
enough sleep). Discuss unhealthy choices that can lead to specific issues,
problems, illnesses, etc. (Ie. Smoking, alcohol/drug abuse, eating disorders,
etc).
Grade 6:
Ask your child what they can tell you about
biodiversity.
Discuss/research why is biodiversity important?
Discuss with your child ways in which your family can positively
impact biodiversity.
Discuss /research how humans negatively impact biodiversity and
possible consequences.
Ask your child to tell you about their favourite animal. Then use
a search engine to learn about the animal. What kind of adaptations does it
have? How does this help the animal? What kind of climate does it prefer? What
ecosystem is it a part of?
