October Reading Goals
Theme: Mysteries
MYSTERY: A novel that is a fictional piece of writing that centres on an unresolved problem. The plot often creates suspense by taking surprising twists and tuns that reach a climax before being resolved.
Two“Just Right” Mystery Novels
. Make a wanted poster for the villains in one of the mystery books. You may choose to make the poster after completing the book and learn who the villain is or while you are still reading the book and suspecting one of the characters. You are expected todraw a picture of the villain, list his or her crimes, give a physical description and choose the reward amount. Be sure to use colour and ensure there is no pencil on the final copy.
. Make a chart that identifies the components of a mystery story (to be discussed in class). You must list each component of a mystery and then identify each component in one of the mystery books (not the book you did the poster for).
One “Challenging” Free Choice Novel
. Write a letter to the protagonist (hero) in the story. Explain how you felt when you were reading the novel. Comment on the qualities that you think makes him/her heroic or the heroic qualities you think he/she does not possess but perhaps should. Be creative and include 3-4 detailed paragraphs.
. Visualization
While reading any of your three novels, choose a scene to illustrate. This should be a scene that you visualized strongly while reading and the illustration should represent your visualizations. Complete one paragraph explaining how visualizing helps you to understand a text.
Recommendations: See Recommended Mystery Books list located in the classroom. Write down your top 5 picks and look for them in ASPS’s library or your local public library.
