For the month of September, we have been doing a lot of introductory activities and diagnostics in our subject areas. This helps me to understand the strengths and needs of each individual in our class to be better able to meet these needs.

October:
Language: Mysteries
Reading: We will be reading and solving lots of different mysteries. We will be focusing on the comprehension strategies of visualizing and inferring before, during, and after reading.
Writing: We will be focusing on narratives, more specficially the elements of a mystery to help us as we write our very own mysteries.
Media Literacy: We will be exploring book covers and what makes us pick up a book. We will apply this learning to create our very own book covers for our mini-mysteries.
Oral: Students will share their mystery and accompanying crime scene and book cover to the class.
Math: We have just started our culminating task for math. Students are investing $1 000 000 in the TSX. Students should be sharing the assignment and evaluation information with you this week!
Science: We will be continuing with our Human Body (gr 5) and Biodiversity (gr 6) units. Students should be starting culminating tasks soon. At that point, they will be bringing home an outline and assessment information.
Social Studies: When we finish our first Science unit, we will begin with "Aspects of Citizenship and Government in Canada" (gr 5) and " Canada's Links to the World" (gr 6).
Music: We have officially started our "Recorder Karate" unit. Students earn belts as they master new songs. Students must have a recorder at school on days 2 and 5.
Visual Arts: We have been learning about and experimenting with the elements of design. We will be applying our learning in a small culminating activity. Then we will move to designing and building our very own crime scene dioramas.
